saudade

a novella

Sophie’s always been a drifter, a global nomad. Living everywhere and nowhere.

But that’s all about to change.

As she graduates from university in Denmark, her latest “home”, Sophie finds her wildest dream coming true; she is on the brink of moving to California, the land of eternal summer, to live with Dylan, the pro skateboarder she’s been in love with for years. This will be her last move.

On her last night in Copenhagen, Sophie and her Danish best friend Kasper lay under the stars, sprawled on a rooftop, lingering in the most intimate of conversations... And suddenly Sophie realizes she’s a little reluctant to leave.

Told through a series of intimate confessions and conversations, with an array of visual scenes set in the contrasting cities of Los Angeles and Copenhagen, Saudade is a story of reconciling dreams with reality, the difficulties and thrills of making love work, and deciding on a place to call home. It touches the fantastical, legendary shores of the Pacific Ocean, the calm northern seas of Scandinavia, the danger and freedom of skateboarding, and making the decisions that might change the rest of your life.

“We sent each other pictures and words and videos and it was supposed to fade away but it didn’t. Instead the words, the promises we’d whispered in those delirious nights became sober, tangible. Real. And I knew this was it.

Soon, I would belong somewhere. I would belong to one place, at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, like I’d always dreamed. And I wouldn’t be alone.”
